Justice For Stephanie

42 min

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses domestic violence and suicide. Listener discretion is advised. In this episode of Community Conversation for Northeast Nevada, Megan Ray sits down with Shania Cortes, President of Justice for Stephanie, to share the story behind the nonprofit and the family legacy that continues to drive its mission. Shania talks about her sister, Stephanie Gonzalez, whose life was tragically lost in 2011 following years in a domestic violence relationship, and her mother, Lidia Cortes, who founded Justice for Stephanie before passing away in 2021. We discuss domestic violence awareness, recognizing unhealthy and controlling behaviors, supporting those who may be experiencing abuse, and why these conversations are so important in our community. We also learn about the Justice for Stephanie scholarship, currently offered to an Elko High School senior planning to attend college in Nevada, and the organization’s hopes to expand the program in the future. Plus, Shania shares details about the inaugural Justice for Stephanie Masquerade Ball, happening Friday, October 16th at 5:00 PM at Lostra Warehouse, featuring dinner, music, dancing, raffles, and a silent auction. Proceeds will help Justice for Stephanie continue its mission and support future opportunities in our community. Community Conversation is proudly sponsored by Barney Trucking, Gallagher Ford, and Neff’s Diesel Repair & Performance.
