Elko Community Garden

43 min

In this episode of Community Conversation for Northeast Nevada, Megan Ray sits down with Alana Basso and Robin Wignall, Treasurer and Director with the Elko Community Garden, to talk about the garden’s history, its mission, and the role it plays in bringing people together throughout the Elko community. We discuss how the garden got started, what it takes to grow food in Northeast Nevada’s challenging climate, opportunities for families and new gardeners, community partnerships, volunteering, education, and the importance of providing a space where people can learn, grow, and connect. We also address the recent theft and vandalism at the garden, including produce taken from private family plots and beds benefiting FISH, plants being dug up, and more than 20 tomato cages being taken. Alana and Robin share how the incident has affected gardeners, what is being done to improve security, and how the community can help the garden recover and continue moving forward.
